"Let's go," Yan Hang said.
Chu Yi still didn't speak. He stood there in a daze for a while, then walked over to the door.
No one inside said anything. When Chu Yi went out and closed the door, Granny's voice came from inside. The first cry was like a howl, followed by crying sounds that were hard to tell if genuine or not, or what emotions they contained.
Chu Yi walked downstairs with his head lowered. Only when he walked out of the corridor did he say: "I probably won't, come back again in the future."
"It doesn't matter," Yan Hang put an arm around his shoulder, "A home is not just a name, it's not just pointing to a house and calling it home.
Chu Yi looked at him.
"It depends on the people inside, and the feelings," Yan Hang said, "Those make a home."
"Mm," Chu Yi responded.
"Home is where you feel you belong*," Yan Hang added another sentence.
*T/N: Said in English
"What?" Chu Yi looked at him.
"Guess," Yan Hang said.
"Say it again," Chu Yi took out his phone and poked at it a few times pointing at him, "I'll record, a video."
"Ready?" Yan Hang asked.
"Yeah," Chu Yi nodded, "Please begin, your performance."
"Once upon a time there was a dog named Little Dog. When he grew up he became Big Dog Bro," Yan Hang said rapidly, "Big Dog Bro gave himself a name, Potato, and was especially scared of getting wrinkles on his handsome face. He thought he was the most handsome in the world, with a face even bigger than a wheel hub..."
Chu Yi held up his phone, mouth half open, looking at him in shock.
"Big Dog Bro even wanted to crack the password to my treasure map and make me tell him, and record it on video," Yan Hang said. "How could I ever tell him, even if he wanted to charm me with his beauty? But I would absolutely not say."
"What the f**k..." Chu Yi was extremely shocked.
Yan Hang kept a straight face. "And he's cursing now too. I still won't tell even if he curses. We of the Onion Clan..."
"Oh shut up," Chu Yi said.
"Done recording?" Yan Hang asked.
"I just don't, don't want to talk anymore," Chu Yi sighed and stopped the video, then tapped play again.
After listening to Yan Hang's words again, he lowered his head and started laughing, laughing at his phone all the way.
"Silly dog," Yan Hang patted him on the back of his head.
Originally according to Chu Yi's plan, he should have stayed home for the day. But unexpectedly there was such a sudden change. He and Yan Hang stood on the street, not knowing what to do.
"Call your mom," Yan Hang said, "Ask what happened, get some clarity in your heart, or you'll still feel bad when you think of this in the future."
"Okay," Chu Yi nodded, took out his phone and dialed his mom's number.
Powered off.
This result was quite unexpected, but actually not that surprising, still within his mom's style.
That's it then.
Chu Yi looked up. Today's sun was still great. Standing in the sunlight, he could still feel the warmth in the gaps between gusts of wind.
"Let's go to the boxing gym," Yan Hang made plans for him, "Treat your auntie to a meal after. Then go to your grandpa's place after eating."
"Okay," Chu Yi took a deep breath, then let it out slowly, feeling a bit better.
Actually it wasn't a big deal.
He had always wanted to get away from here. Aside from wanting to get away from the unpleasantness around him, he also wanted to get away from that home he often didn't want to go back to.
It could be seen as a kind of liberation now. If before coming back he still thought of it being his mom, grandma, grandpa after all, he didn't have such thoughts anymore.
It seemed like there was no such close relative called Chu Yi in their hearts.
If they hadn't already changed clothes and were getting ready to sleep, the two probably would have dragged him out right then and there to fight it out.
He really liked this feeling.
Seeing familiar people shocked by his transformation was like having someone help confirm that he really was growing up bit by bit, no longer the bullied loser he used to be.
His aunt was a bit better since she had seen him once before. But when she saw Yan Hang, she still interrogated him cautiously for a long time.
"Our family's Chu Yi has always been simple-minded, honest, and gentle," his aunt said. "To be honest, what I worry about most is him getting tricked or kidnapped or sold off or something when he goes out since he's so gullible."
"That probably won't happen," Yan Hang said. "His nickname is Brother Dog."
"So he really has grown up," his aunt sighed. "From now on he'll truly only be able to rely on himself."
"Mm," Chu Yi nodded.
"If your mom switched places with your aunt..." Yan Hang said as they sat in the car on the way to grandfather's house.
But he was quickly interrupted by Chu Yi: "Then I wouldn't, have met you."
"That's too big a price to pay just to meet me, isn't it," Yan Hang laughed.
"Depends how you look at it," Chu Yi said.
Yan Hang clicked his tongue: "Got complimented a few times and now he's spouting philosophy already."
"Still gotta match the vibe though," Chu Yi laughed.
It was clear going to his grandfather's house made Chu Yi happy. Unlike the silent ride home, he chatted the whole way in the car.
He stumbled over his words introducing the passing sights to Yan Hang, as well as funny stories from his childhood visits.
Yan Hang didn't say much, just watching and listening to Chu Yi talk the whole time.
"Tiring?" Chu Yi asked.
"Hm?" Yan Hang looked at him.
"Listening to me talk," Chu Yi said.
"Used to it," Yan Hang said. "I'd probably feel weird if you suddenly spoke smoothly one day."
"You adapt well," Chu Yi nodded.
"Thanks for the compliment," Yan Hang said.
Seeing Chu Yi's grandparents, Yan Hang's whole body relaxed.
This was the impression he had of what elderly people should be like in a family - a kindly, smiling old man and a warm, smiling old woman.
"Hello Grandpa and Grandma," Yan Hang greeted them naturally.
"Yan Hang right?" Grandpa pointed at him and said to Grandma, "This is the leader of that 5-star place."
"Supervisor," Chu Yi corrected.
"The 5-star supervisor," Grandma gave a thumbs up, "Grandma will make a 6-star meal for you guys tomorrow!"
"I'll cook tomorrow," Yan Hang said, "My cooking is 8 stars."
"See that," Grandpa nudged Grandma, "You lost!"
Grandma waved her hand, not totally convinced: "Let me tidy up your beds first. I thought like previous years you'd only come over on the second or third day!"
After a flurry of activity, Grandma still insisted on making them a 9-star bowl of noodles to eat.
"Ah," after eating, Yan Hang stretched lazily as he stood by the window of the small home. "They're asleep right?"
"Asleep, usual time, it's been half a day already," Chu Yi smiled.
"Ate too much," Yan Hang said.
"Doesn't matter if you can't finish," Chu Yi patted his stomach.
"Would be rude not to finish," Yan Hang said.
"Tired?" Chu Yi looked at him.
Yan Hang seemed relaxed and natural talking to Grandpa and Grandma but he knew Yan Hang probably didn't actually enjoy such occasions that much, since he was a lone wolf.
"Not bad," Yan Hang said, "Tired yes, but not annoying."
"Grandma talks a lot," Chu Yi said.
