Chapter 18

Qiao Shao was stunned. In all his seventeen years, what was happening to him right this moment definitely ranked among his most humiliating experiences—at least in the top three!

—Someone had hoisted him into the air!

He'd been lifted bodily by the armpits, like a little kid being picked up by an adult!

After being carried up three steps, Qiao Shao finally recovered his runaway voice. "Put me down!"

His voice echoed through the dorm building. Luckily, no one was around right now, or he would have drawn a whole crowd of spectators.

The culprit's ears twitched. "Doesn't your ankle hurt?"

So what if it hurt?

A man had his pride. Better to lose his head than lose face!

Qiao Shao turned back in indignant anguish. "Who does this?!"

If anyone actually saw him, screw being a good student—he, Qiao Shao, would be East High's number one laughingstock!

He Shen watched with interest as his eyes grew even rounder with anger. "Oh, you don't like this..."

Qiao Shao was so furious his tongue trembled. "Who..." Who the fuck would like being hoisted into the air?!

He Shen finished his thought. "So you'd rather be carried bridal-style."

Qiao Shao: "...................................."

At that instant, Qiao Shao thought that if Lou Xiao dared scoop him up around the waist, he would drag him down the stairs with him. They would die together!

He Shen put him down and made as if to...

Forgetting all about his aching ankle, Qiao Shao threatened, "You actually do that, and I'll fight you!"

"I was only joking." He Shen's mischievous streak had been stirred up again. "Now I really want to try it."

Qiao Shao's insides ached with fury. "You!"

Worried that he might lose his balance and fall again, He Shen finally said something serious. "How are you going to get upstairs?"

Qiao Shao clutched the railing in a death grip. "Hop up on one foot."

He Shen kindly reminded him, "Hop up five floors?"

Qiao Shao hadn't hopped up a single step yet, and his leg was already going weak.

A hint of amusement entered He Shen's usually aloof eyes. "Come here."

Qiao Shao eyed him warily, ready to resist to the death.

"What are you scared of?" He Shen dropped a bombshell. "We're both guys. What am I going to do, r*pe you?"

Young Master Qiao had never encountered anyone so shameless. His brain short-circuited.

He Shen took his arm and effortlessly hoisted him onto his back.

Qiao Shao: "..."

He Shen leaned forward, settling him more securely on his back. "Stay still. I'm not responsible if you fall off."

Qiao Shao rested his hands on his shoulders, still utterly and completely bewildered.

He Shen had already started up the stairs. Even with someone on his back, his pace hadn't slowed at all.

Qiao Shao finally calmed down.

Sure, this guy was a bona fide asshole, but he still had to remember the favor of being carried upstairs.

Back in the dorm room, He Shen set him on the bed. Once he was sitting securely, Qiao Shao looked up at him. Seeing that he'd climbed all the way to the fifth floor without even a change in his breathing, he couldn't help muttering inwardly: What kind of freakish physique was this? Just what you'd expect from the domineering School Tyrant. He'd probably built it up fighting.

He Shen examined his ankle and frowned. "It's a little swollen."

Qiao Shao looked too, but couldn't see much difference between his two feet.

Actually, it didn't hurt all that much anymore. Especially with it resting flat like this, without moving, he barely felt anything.

Just then, He Shen pressed the top of his foot, and Qiao Shao hissed.

He Shen raised an eyebrow at him. "Hurts?"

Qiao Shao put on a brave face. "Not too bad."

He Shen lowered his eyes and studied it a little longer. "Call your parents and go to the hospital for an X-ray."

Qiao Shao's heart skipped a beat. "No!" he said at once.

His refusal was so swift and decisive that He Shen was a little surprised.

How could Qiao Shao possibly dare call Dad?

If his family found out about this, he could practically see what would happen!

Taking time off to go home would be the least of it. He was afraid Dad would replace the school's athletic field, his paternal Grandpa would install a couple of elevators in the dorm building, and his maternal Grandpa would turn the infirmary into a top-tier hospital...

"No, absolutely not!" The very thought terrified Qiao Shao. Forgetting that Lou Xiao was an asshole, he practically pleaded, "You can't call them."

He Shen could tell that Qiao Shao was genuinely opposed to the idea.

It didn't make sense.

What ordinary high school student wouldn't jump at such a perfect chance to take time off, go home, and slack off?

Unless his home was somewhere he didn't want to return to—somewhere he couldn't return to.

He Shen thought of the little guy hunting for bargains at the superstore, then of Little Turtle arriving alone at the start of the school year with his bedding on his back. Then he looked at those scrawny, clearly malnourished arms and legs...

"Wait here." He Shen stood up.

Qiao Shao had no idea what he was going to do. All he could do was look up at him.

He Shen said, "If you don't want to go home, get better soon."

With that, he pushed open the door and left the dorm room.

Qiao Shao had never once been able to follow the School Tyrant's train of thought!

He wanted to get better right this instant too, but how was he supposed to speed it up?

Still... Qiao Shao examined his ankle. He didn't think it was too serious. If it were broken, he wouldn't be feeling this comfortable.

Qiao Shao tried moving his foot. A sharp pain shot through it, and he let out a soft breath, not daring to move it again.

What rotten luck.

He'd sprained his ankle on his second day of school. His road to an education was one obstacle after another.

Qiao Shao flopped back onto the bed and stared blankly at the bed boards above him.

The dorm building was quiet. The boarding students were all out doing their morning run, and the day students hadn't arrived yet. The dorm supervisor was probably the only other person in the entire building.

The boys' dorm was close to the athletic field, but Room 516 was at the southernmost end, facing the opposite direction. With the windows shut for the air conditioning, not a single sound from outside made it in.

Lying in bed, Qiao Shao was soon submerged in that indescribable stillness.

His heart lurched. He wanted to open the window, but the moment he put his foot down, an excruciating stab of pain shot to his brain, drawing a low groan from him.

Qiao Shao immediately pulled his phone out from under his pillow and put on his earphones.

About two songs later, the dorm room door opened.

He Shen was back, carrying a plastic shopping bag.

Hearing him, Qiao Shao took off his earphones and sat up. He Shen thought he looked even paler than before. "If it hurts that much, don't tough it out. I'll take you to the hospital."

He didn't bring up calling his parents again.

Qiao Shao immediately replied, "No need!"

He Shen said, "What if it's broken?"

"It isn't!" Qiao Shao declared.

He Shen glanced at him and drawled, "Is your name CT Scanner, by any chance?"

Qiao Shao: "..." He had no comeback.

He Shen didn't press him. He set the shopping bag on the bed and crouched in front of Qiao Shao.

Now Qiao Shao could see what was inside the bag: some medicine and an ice pack.

The school doctor didn't start work until eight. Had he gone off campus to buy medicine for him?

As much as he disliked this overbearing, rule-breaking School Tyrant, Qiao Shao couldn't help feeling a little warm inside.

He wasn't that bad after all. He did care about his fellow students.

He Shen sprayed some medicine on his ankle, rubbed on another kind, and finally applied the ice pack.

His movements were quick and practiced, and he knew exactly how much to use without even checking the instructions.

Qiao Shao watched in surprise, then thought it over and understood—this was probably how delinquents lived. They got into fights every so often and had to treat their own injuries afterward, which explained why he knew these sprain-and-bruise remedies so well.

Looked at that way, being a School Tyrant wasn't easy either.

Qiao Shao's prejudice against him shrank by another tiny fingernail's worth.

Once everything was done, He Shen instructed him, "Skip your morning classes. Rest and see how it goes. If the swelling goes down, you won't need the hospital. Otherwise, you have to get an X-ray."

Qiao Shao nodded, looking quite obedient. His eyes, though, said he wasn't taking it seriously.

He Shen didn't say any more about it. Instead, he asked something else. "Which class are you actually in?"

Qiao Shao blinked. "Class 6!"

He Shen raised an eyebrow. "Then should I go tell Class 6's homeroom teacher about your situation?"

Had his lie about being in Class 6 been exposed in just half a day?

Did the School Tyrant really have that much time on his hands?!

Qiao Shao hesitated, then decided there wasn't much point in keeping it a secret anymore. "Class 1."

Of course He Shen hadn't had the free time to check Class 6 for Qiao Shao. He'd simply seen Tang Yu that morning and guessed the kid had fed him a random lie yesterday.

Tang Yu was Class 1's homeroom teacher. Any student he helped out like that had to be from his own class.

He Shen had been exhausted yesterday, his mind wandering all day. He seemed to recall hearing something about a transfer student when he entered the classroom, but he hadn't paid much attention.

He Shen lifted his eyelids to look at him. "Not lying this time?"

Qiao Shao said, "Why do you have to know which class I'm in?"

It wasn't the same class as yours, anyway!

He Shen lifted the shopping bag. "Makes collecting debts easier."

Qiao Shao: "..."

He Shen checked the time. "I've got something to do, so I'm heading out. Get some rest."

Qiao Shao nodded. Only when He Shen was about to leave did he say quietly, "Lou Xiao, thanks."

They might have gotten off on a very bad foot, but he really had helped. Qiao Shao gave credit where credit was due.

He Shen froze for a moment, thinking—just thank me. What are you thanking Lou Xiao for?

Had Lou Xiao come by? Impossible. That guy would still be dreaming at this hour.

Qiao Shao was clearly speaking to him. "How much was the medicine? I'll pay you back."

Then He Shen caught on. The kid had mistaken him for Lou Xiao.

Come to think of it, he'd been sleeping in Lou Xiao's bed yesterday. The misunderstanding made sense.

He Shen gave a meaningful smile without explaining. "We can talk about it later. There'll be plenty of chances."

Huh?

Qiao Shao watched him push the door open and leave, unable to chase after him to pay him back.

Still... there really would be plenty of chances. They shared a dorm room, after all.

Qiao Shao couldn't bear to miss class.

After the medicine and ice pack, his ankle hadn't swollen up, and as long as nothing touched it, it didn't hurt too much.

Chen Su brought him breakfast. Only after checking with him several times did he help him downstairs, and they went to the classroom together.

First period was Old Tang's math class.

As soon as Tang Yu saw Qiao Shao, he said, "You should get some more rest. The semester's just started, so we're not covering much yet. I'll help you catch up on anything you miss."

Qiao Shao said, "I'm already much better, sir. It's nothing serious, and I'll be sitting down in class anyway. I'll be fine."

Since he'd already come down from the dorm, Tang Yu didn't press the issue. Instead, he gave Qiao Shao a thoroughly earnest round of praise for his enthusiasm for learning.

Qiao Shao was delighted, feeling he'd taken another step toward getting into a good school.

Tang Yu said, "It's hard for you to get around like this. For now, let Chen Su..."

Before he could finish, a voice rang out. "Sir, I can take care of him."

Qiao Shao froze at the sound of that voice.

He turned and, sure enough, saw a familiar figure.

The boy stood by the classroom door, so tall his head seemed about to touch the frame. He was looking at Qiao Shao with the hint of a smile, and he even winked his left eye.

Qiao Shao: "???"

What was the international class's School Tyrant doing in their classroom?

Old Tang promptly dealt Qiao Shao another crushing blow. "Sure, you two happen to be seatmates, so that'll make it easy to look after him."

Qiao Shao looked horrified. He thought he must be hearing things.

Seatmates?

Him and Lou Xiao?
