Chapter 28 - Chapter 27

"Give me an aerial view."

An aerial map immediately appeared as requested, directly projected into Fu Luo's optic nerve endings.

During her idle time here, following the principle of "not causing trouble for Uncle Luo", she worked as a repairman, transporter, and did everything. Running up and down every day without rest, coupled with her innate excellent sense of direction, she had long been familiar with the map of the entire central business district.

She saw a red dot representing "No. 5" flashing, moving at a rapid speed. In addition, there was another green dot labeled "No. 3" approaching No. 5 from another direction, seemingly intending to converge - it was a suspicious target marked by someone else.

The intersection of their paths...

Hey, doesn't it seem to be the twin tower building where Teacher Robin's studio is located?

The entrance to the underground parking lot of the building happened to be near Fu Luo. She was close enough to take a direct path. Fu Luo decisively turned around and dived into the parking lot.

Under the S-level combat readiness situation in Beijing, the central business district, a place with a high concentration of people, was naturally evacuated. The usually bustling building was now empty and silent.

Fu Luo used a laser knife to melt the door lock and walked sideways into a side door of the building. There was a very hidden freight elevator that few people used - basically, apart from robots, only the human transporter Fu Luo would take that elevator.

At this time, Fu Luo discovered something very strange. The communicator seemed to have experienced some kind of delay. The aerial view was silent, and except for the blue cursor representing her own position, all cursors were motionless.

Fu Luo couldn't help but tug at her own ear lobe: "No way, even the quality of this thing is unreliable?"

She hesitated for two seconds on the spot, and suddenly remembered the building's central control room.

The central control room was in the southwest corner of the tenth floor. Fu Luo had been there once and rushed in with ease - fortunately, although the building was empty, the power was not cut off.

She quickly activated all the cameras in the entire building. In an instant, images appeared on screens of all sizes in the control room.

Fu Luo quickly scanned every corner visible to the surveillance cameras, and suddenly, her gaze was fixed on the surveillance image of the third-floor corridor.

The "Twin Tower" seemed to have originated from ancient America, and later became a retro-style building for office buildings in the business district. It had a base at the bottom, with a tall building connected on each side. The protruding towers on top were isolated, but the lower levels were connected, mostly containing indoor commercial streets.

On the top floor of the base, the third floor, there was a long observation corridor connecting the two sides, where a coffee shop was located. Both sides were floor-to-ceiling windows, and the middle was filled with vines and green plants. People sitting inside could both conceal themselves and see outside.

In the surveillance, right in the center of a patch of greenery, Fu Luo saw a bald little boy.

The next moment, as if sensing something, the boy suddenly raised his head, his eyes seeming to penetrate through the surveillance camera lens and meeting Fu Luo's eyes directly, giving people the illusion of "he saw me".

At this moment, a "ding-dong" sound suddenly rang in Fu Luo's ears, and the communicator sent a warning prompt: "No. 5 mark has entered the same building, preparing to load the internal map of the building..."

Damn it, don't directly send me this kind of information after such a long delay!

Is the system messing with me?!

It was obviously too late to take the elevator down. This building's elevator was ridiculously slow, and it would be faster to run down the stairs. But Fu Luo believed that if she ran down from here, she would definitely not reach the third floor faster than the other party.

Without hesitation, she turned around and dashed into the storage room on this floor, very brutally chopping open the door with a laser knife - if she remembered correctly, there was a fire-fighting rope for fire alarms in the storage room.

Fu Luo's hands and feet flew, and in no time she had tied the fire rope, put on anti-friction gloves, casually wrapped it around her waist a couple of times, without even taking safety measures, directly pushed open the window, and with great skill and courage, slid down the rope from the tenth floor. At the same time, she quickly confirmed her coordinates: "Third building area, third floor central corridor, target found, requesting support!"

There was only the sound of wind in her ears; she heard no response.

Before she finished speaking, Fu Luo had already slipped to the third floor in the blink of an eye. She tightened her hand to stop her descent, and at the same time kicked up, smashing a floor-to-ceiling window of the coffee shop and rolling inside with a clatter.

Before she could even stand up from the shards of glass, a warning of "No. 5 mark 50 meters" was received in the headset.

How come it's so fast this time?!

On the map, it showed her and that person in a straight line. At that moment, a chill shot up Fu Luo's spine. This strange intuition made her roll two feet to the side without even raising her head. Immediately after, bullets bounced off the shiny floor, hitting exactly where she had landed just now.

Only then did Fu Luo see clearly the person wearing a fluffy top, whom she had mistaken for a little girl.

That was really a person who was neither a "girl" nor a "child".

The furry hat and clothes, originally loose, were now stretched and torn, their seams burst and hanging from the person's frame. The face was still that delicate and somewhat weathered face, but the bones were at least an inch wider!

The legendary bone shrinking... could it be real?

As the person moved, a brilliant light flashed before Fu Luo's eyes, blinding her for a moment as something hurtled toward the little boy in the corner.

What was that?

A laser weapon?

That's impossible! How could a laser weapon be fired? The recoil problem simply cannot be solved!

Wang Yansheng's order suddenly rang in her ears - he must not fall into the hands of the enemy, nor can he be allowed to die.

In a flash, Fu Luo drew the pocket-sized dual-purpose pistol from her pocket. At that moment, she was simply performing beyond her level. With almost no time to aim, relying entirely on the so-called intangible "hand feel", she accurately hit the leg of the boy's chair with a single shot. The four-legged chair immediately tilted and fell, directly knocking the boy down, allowing the unknown weapon to narrowly fly over the boy's head and hit the wall, instantly blasting a hole a foot square in the wall.

It was indeed a laser!

Why are other people's weapons so cool?!

The little bit of confidence Fu Luo had in their army when she first received the dual-purpose pocket pistol, instantly shattered.

However, there was no time for her to feel resentful. Fu Luo suddenly pushed off the ground, flipping up from the floor. She grabbed the little boy who was nearly buried by the wall debris. Before she could take a second step, she heard a gust of wind behind her.

Fu Luo only had time to drop the little boy before bending nearly 90 degrees at the waist. In an extremely twisted posture, she dodged the sweeping kick from behind, then drew out her laser knife and slashed towards the sound of the wind.

One slash...missed!

She watched helplessly as the opponent's leg instantly shortened by nearly 40 centimeters, springing back to avoid the razor-sharp laser knife.

My god, a monster...

Suddenly, a milky childish voice came from beside her: "Inexperienced little girl, that's just a mutation from polyostotic disease."

The boy's speech was slow and steady, his tone full of certainty, with a hint of subtle sarcasm.

The inexperienced Fu Luo tightened her grip on the knife handle. At this moment, a second warning came through the damn earpiece: "No. 3 is about to enter the building, straight-line distance fifty...ten...one..."

Wait!

Why is there only a warning when the person is right in front of me again?

And what's with this skipping countdown?

Fu Luo's pupils dilated instantly. She lowered her body, grabbed the presumptuous boy who called her "little girl" with one hand, and lunged forward, rolling and crawling. The suspected "laser bullets" from an unknown weapon nearly grazed her feet as they shot past. Fu Luo suspected her pants were about to catch fire.

And where she had just been standing, the glass was completely shattered - the colleague-marked No. 3, like Fu Luo, had swung in through the window like Spider-Man.

Fu Luo hid the boy behind her, with her back against the corner of the wall, kneeling on one knee in a posture that could attack or defend.

"No. 3" gave a cold, grim laugh. He took out an employee ID from his pocket, waved it in front of Fu Luo, then loosened his hand and dropped it on the ground.

The familiar magnetic ID card, similar to the one Teacher Wang gave her, indicated...indicated that one of their people had already...

For a moment, it was as if the animal instinct for self-preservation in her body had awakened. The two people opposite her filled Fu Luo with a terror like that of a small animal encountering a natural enemy—a bone-chilling tremor.

She remained motionless, her palm holding the laser knife handle covered in cold sweat.

The brat behind her sighed again in a pretentious manner: "It's the Disabled League."

Huh? The Disabled League?

At this point, she had no time to ask any questions. However, the boy either had the ability to read minds, could see her back and know her doubts, or was just talking to himself. He continued to explain as if no one else was around: "The League of Assassins with Deformed Bones."

This...name doesn't sound very friendly.

"When humans from the other star system fled Earth, they were contaminated by cosmic radiation. Many developed polyostotic disease, a bone deformity that can cause disability or even death in severe cases, and shows a clear genetic predisposition. But amazingly, as if fate always leaves a glimmer of hope for humanity, the polyostotic disease gene is very unstable, with a mutation rate tens of thousands of times higher than normal genes." The boy explained in a voice that gave people goosebumps, unhurriedly, "Among them, one percent have beneficial mutated genes, some of which can greatly enhance individual physical fitness."

The other party seemed intentionally indulgent and did not interrupt the boy's words.

"Just say a little more," Fu Luo thought, "to help me stall for time."

"Sixty years ago, the other star system's League of Assassins with Deformed Bones was founded, similar to a mercenary organization, recruiting all kinds of physical variants caused by polyostotic disease gene mutations...some things that normal humans can't handle, such as laser emission weapons, whose recoil can easily shatter a strong adult male's arms, have become the exclusive patent of these people with deformed bones." The boy gave a low, cold laugh, "It's just...since when did the League become the government's lapdog?"

"There's profit to be made," No. 5 said in a strange accent. Then he turned to Fu Luo, "With the person behind you here, your signal can't be sent out of this area. Don't waste your effort stalling for time."

Wha...

The patter of footsteps sounded. The boy Fu Luo had been blocking walked out from behind her and presumptuously held out his hand.

Seeing him up close, Fu Luo realized that his whole body was shrouded in an almost invisible membrane. The light refracted through this strange medium, and as it shimmered, the boy's skin appeared a bit bluish.

Children's eyes are usually proportionally larger than adults'. The boy's eyes were as black as a bottomless well, cold and eerie. For some reason, they seemed a bit inhuman.

"This is a high-polymer closed network that distorts the medium in a certain space. All signals will form an isolation zone with me as the center point and a radius of fifty meters."

No wonder the signal earlier was so strange!

No wonder all the light spots seemed to be hit with a body-bind curse!

No wonder this brat could sneak out on his own without anyone noticing!

Wait, so whose side is this kid's butt sitting on?

"I can't take this off," the boy said. Then, as if sighing, he looked at Fu Luo with an almost benevolent but eerie gaze and said, "The cosmic radiation I carry is enough to kill the entire city's population in a few seconds. Little girl, you haven't seen much blood yet, right? Hand me over to them, it's okay."

Fu Luo: "..."

Who are you calling little girl?

No. 5 grinned, baring his teeth. "He's right."

The two sides were in a stalemate for a few seconds. After a while, Fu Luo expressionlessly retracted her laser knife, dangling the pocket pistol from her fingertips, slowly raising her hand.

No. 5 was very satisfied with this timely attitude. This person, who could stretch and shrink like putty, slowly walked towards Fu Luo.

At this moment, the pocket pistol suddenly spun nimbly on Fu Luo's fingertips. She abruptly pulled the trigger, firing three shots out the window that No. 3 had smashed earlier. She fired the fourth shot at the shocked No. 5. At the same time, she grabbed the boy's collar and retreated towards the bar at top speed.
