Chen Chao just said, "No, something came up."
He clearly didn't want to elaborate, so Miao Jiayan didn't ask.
Jiang Xun sent Miao Jiayan a photo of him sleeping on the plane. An eye mask was fastened over his eyes, and the exposed lower half of his face looked exceptionally delicate.
After returning, Jiang Xun, with nothing better to do, posted it on Weibo.
The comments below immediately started flooding in.
—Wifey is so cute, wifey kisses [Kiss][Kiss]
—My wifey's lips were made for kissing!
—Hey Xun who took the photo, I'd like to see what other good stuff you can capture.
Miao Jiayan got out of the car holding a KFC bucket. He had felt hungry before getting in and had specifically gone to buy it, but once inside the car, he was too embarrassed to eat. By the time he swayed all the way back, he wasn't that hungry anymore.
Miao Jiayan had been busy with work these past few days and hadn't video-chatted with his grandma for long. He just called every day to say he was safe and then hung up. His grandma didn't know he was back yet.
The moment he returned, Miao Jiayan felt extremely relaxed. This was his home, the place where he had grown up freely.
Miao Jiayan used a napkin to grab a piece of fried chicken from the bucket and began eating it as he walked. He never ate while walking when he was out, but back here, all those rules disappeared. The moment he held food in his hands, he wanted to eat it.
"Miao'er, you're back?" On the way, Miao Jiayan ran into Auntie Zhang, who greeted him from a distance.
With his hands full, Miao Jiayan couldn't wave, so he just smiled and called out, "Auntie Zhang."
Grandma Miao was in the kitchen simmering soup. Miao Jiayan came in with his backpack on and asked, "What are you making?"
"Some bone broth." Grandma Miao was happy to see him back and showed him the soup in the pot. "I had your grandpa wait for them, the freshest soup bones. I've been simmering it for an hour."
"Why are we having bone broth in the summer?" Miao Jiayan asked.
"It's for your Uncle Chen," Grandma Miao told him. "Your Uncle Chen and his son both had a bad fall. They're recovering over at your Grandma Chen's place."
Miao Jiayan was startled. "Grandpa Chen fell?!"
A fall is no laughing matter for the elderly. At their age, injuries to muscles and bones are difficult to recover from.
"No, no," Grandma Miao said quickly. "It wasn't Grandpa Chen."
Miao Jiayan was relieved. He first let out an "Ah," breathing a sigh of relief.
Two seconds later, the breath he had just released hitched abruptly. His eyes widened as he looked at his grandma. "Then who was it?"
With Uncle Chen, they're a "father and son pair." If you take out Grandpa Chen, who's left?
Without waiting for Grandma Miao to answer, Miao Jiayan put down the bucket he was holding and ran out, not even taking off his backpack.
Just as he entered the courtyard, Miao Jiayan heard Uncle Chen's cheerful voice: "Son, your buzz cut looks so handsome. You've got my style from back in the day."
Miao Jiayan pushed the door open and ran inside, following the voice into a room on the first floor. Without even bothering to wipe the grease off his hand, he entered the room and froze on the spot—
Chen Chao and Chen Guangda were each lying on a bed, their feet elevated high on pillows. The only difference was that Chen Guangda's leg was in a cast, while Chen Chao's was not.
The father and son had both gotten buzz cuts, their head shapes identical. Hearing him run in, they both looked toward the door.
Chen Guangda even greeted him with a smile, "Miao'er's back?"
Chen Chao glanced at him before lowering his gaze and going back to his phone.
"What happened?" Miao Jiayan asked worriedly, his brow furrowed. "How did this happen?"
"A small accident, a small accident," Chen Guangda reassured him. "It's nothing serious, just need to rest up."
Miao Jiayan first looked at Chen Guangda's obviously more serious leg and asked him a few questions. Chen Guangda maintained his usual flippant demeanor, so it was hard to tell if he was in pain or not.
While talking to Chen Guangda, his gaze often drifted past him to land on Chen Chao.
"And you, Brother Chao?" After finishing his conversation with Chen Guangda, Miao Jiayan walked over and sat on the edge of Chen Chao's bed. "How are you?"
Chen Chao said, "I'm okay."
Miao Jiayan looked at his swollen ankle, his brow still furrowed. "You can't move it at all? How long do you have to lie down... to recover?"
"Depends," Chen Chao replied. "We'll see how the recovery is in a month."
Miao Jiayan sat just on the edge of the bed, keeping his distance from Chen Chao's leg, afraid of bumping it.
"Did you hurt yourself anywhere else?" Miao Jiayan asked worriedly.
Chen Chao said, "No."
As far as Chen Chao could remember, he had never been in such an embarrassing situation. The blow to this cool city guy's pride was immense. While answering Miao Jiayan's questions, Chen Chao was scrolling through Weibo and happened to see the photo of Miao Jiayan.
The comments below were a jumble of this and that, a complete mess.
Miao Jiayan was still looking at Chen Chao's foot with great concern when Chen Chao suddenly spoke, "Did you use a beauty filter?"
"Huh?" Miao Jiayan didn't know what he was talking about; his brain hadn't caught up yet.
Chen Chao exited the app, locked the screen, and tossed his phone aside, saying, "Even your mole is gone."
